This holds importance for our Path to Newton for several reasons: first, that Newton used theory and logic to explain observable phenomena (he certainly wasn't the first to do this, but the marriage of observation and theory is one that must come up in any discussion of science) and secondly, in the understanding of the motions of planetary bodies. Although the ideas presented in Principia are described in terms of geometry and not the familiar notation you might find in your AP Calculus class, the principles are there, and they were revolutionary.Ģ) Newtonian Physics: In the books constituting Principia, Newton adeptly derives and describes the laws which govern bodies of motion.

It would be difficult to quantify the effect this work has had on the journey to understanding the natural world, but the following present some of the major ways in which Principia has contributed to this quest:ġ) The formation of Calculus: Newton, in Principia, outlined mathematical concepts that are fundamentally intwined with his rules of physics that today we consider part of calculus. Interestingly enough, this work being as important as it is for the natural sciences does not only concern itself with expiriments and data, but necessarily with mathematics and philosophy.
